Near Chapel Hill, I use to take riding lessons with a guy I use to date. The gentleman and his wife that use to teach us how to ride told me once about a stable they had on their property. When they bought the property, it only had one stable. They use it now for storage because none of their horses would stay in the stable. Every evening they would put the horses in their stalls, making sure the doors were closed and latched tightly. A few hours later, they would look out the window to their horses walking around their property. All the stall doors would be wide open. They tried changing out the latches but the doors would still open by themselves. They ended up having to build a second stable for their horses.
Growing up in North Carolina, I heard about a lot of different legends and ghost stories. One of the more notorious that was localish to Chapel Hill was the Devil's Tramping Ground in Chatham County. The Devil's Tramping Ground is just a barren area in the middle of the forest south Siler City. It's a short walk from Devil's Tromping Grounds Rd so this is an easy place to go check out.
As normal as my life may seem, it usually isn’t long before something paranormal pops up whether it is dealing with actual spirits or someone asking questions about ghost hunting. It really doesn’t take long for it to come up in conversation. Especially when people ask how Jeremy and I met. Not everyone can say that ghosts brought two people together or served as a relationship counselor. Those are stories for a later date though.
I've been struggling with religion for a while. When I was really little, I remember going to a small country church in the woods. I don't remember much. Mainly Easter egg hunting in a white dress. I must have been 5 or 6 because I don't really remember my sister being about of the memory. After that church, my family switched back to the church my parents were married in, Carrboro Baptist Church. It was within walking distance from our house. It was in the center of our town near Franklin Street and the playground of it backed up to my favorite Chinese restaurant. The side of the restaurant that faced the church had a mural that depicted the garden of Eden. I still remember the controversy over it showing Adam and Eve in leaves.
The main reason for my trip back to North Carolina was to be with my sister and mom for the anniversary of my Dad's death. I knew it would be a very difficult anniversary and not one I would want spend half way around the world from them. I knew that if we stayed in Chapel Hill we would just sit around miserable and depressed and that would not be how Dad would want us to be. I had the idea that we should go away for the anniversary and do something that Dad would have wanted to do.
Long before I met Jeremy and while I still lived in Chapel Hill, I was apart of a really cool group. It was a horror movie meet up group. We would get together often to watch scary movies and go to horror movie festivals. The founder of the group is my friend Melly. Before I planned my trip back to North Carolina, Melly said that she wanted me to come to the horror group and spend the day with me. I was excited to see her and the group again.
