One of the things I have seen often around the Kintai-kyo are the Japanese boats along the shore. I have been wanting take a ride in them for a while but haven't seen when they would be offering the rides when I was available to do it. Jeremy and I went down to the Kintai one weekend to see a matchlock gun demonstration. We walked all around the area but couldn't find where the display was going to be. Instead we found the boats and they were getting ready to take people out onto the Nishiki River. Jeremy and I decided to do that instead.
November is just around the corner. That means the Marine Corps Ball is coming up soon. Being overseas can make dress hunting a little difficult. Unless you have really good luck buying clothes off the internet your options usually are what you bring with you, what someone is selling on the classifieds, or if you can find something at the thrift store or the dress exchange. My friend, Anneliese, needed something to wear to the ball but wanted to try something different for this year's ball. She decided she wanted to wear a kimono.
I will be the first to admit it. Since I stopped teaching in December, I haven't really dived into exploring Japan as much as I use to. Yes, I haven't exactly been hiding out in my apartment but I have been staying in my comfort zones by only going to the stores I know and the parts of Hiroshima I have been to repeatedly if I left Iwakuni. With my mom coming in the next month or so and hopefully getting a new camera this week I am getting the itch to start exploring again.
A couple of weeks ago I found out that one of the photographers on base was having a talent search. The talent search winner would have a 5 month internship with her learning everything about photography and how to run a photography business. I applied for the talent search but didn't have much hope in winning. Most of the photos I had to submit were taken with my iPhone. I have a nice camera but honestly don't know how to work it. It is nothing like the film cameras I use to use. Also I don't know much about photography. People have complimented my photographs and I have been told many times that I have a natural eye. I figured I would apply and at the least I could get some critique on my photos.
A couple of weekends ago, we had family photos done for our first anniversary. I was really excited to have them done because the photographer we booked was one of the best in the area. I love the photos that Ashley Wills takes. The whole process from start to finish with her was great. She walked us through what package would be best for our budget and what outfits would look best together.
We have slowly been taking Katniss on adventures. She loves car rides and she loves meeting new people. On Saturday we decided that we would spend the morning out with her. Katniss was very excited for her day out and to try out her new leash and harness.
