Since coming to Japan, one of the things that every wife seems to collect Starbucks mugs. I held out for about a year before I decided to start collecting them too. I bought a Hiroshima coffee mug shortly after I came back in November. Then in February Starbucks released their Sakura line of mugs. As usual, they sold out everywhere in about 48 hours. Luckily my neighbor, Dacia, was in Tokyo where they sell out a bit slower and was able to grab me one. It is a really pretty metallic hot pink travel mug. Two weeks after Starbucks released these mugs, they released the Purity line of Sakura mugs. Dacia and I decided to drive to Hiroshima the day they released to go pick up some new mugs.
A couple of weeks ago our friend, Shawna, invited a bunch of us from the Bunco group to go to a plum blossom festival. It was about an hour south of base near Hikari. Shawna told us to bring Katniss because she was bringing her pup, Mochi. The festival was located on a large hill (small mountain) that had plum blossom trees on top of the flat hill and going down around the hill towards the coast. It was really beautiful. Even though there were some venders there, Jeremy and I brought sandwiches and snacks from 7-11 so we could have a picnic with the others in our group. It was a beautiful area and the kids were having fun playing and running around.
Back in April, Jeremy, Marcus, Charrleen and I went to the town of Tsuwano in Shimane Prefecture. We had heard about a festival that was going on there that we really wanted to check out. It was a Yabusame festival. Yabusame is a horseback archery tournament and the yabusame course in Tsuwano is the last remaining original one in Japan.
Last week Jeremy and I went to Rabbit Island (Ōkunoshima, Hiroshima Prefecture) with Desirae, Dejay, Stephanie, and Anthony. It's about 2 hours drive from base. It was a fun ride including when Desirae's and Dejay's van decided to eat the toll ticket right as we exited the expressway. It had slipped under the radio. It… Continue reading Hopping Around Rabbit Island
One of the things we promised Katniss was that we would take her to see the Sakura (cherry blossoms) when they started blooming. They had started coming out the day before the Byakko Festival. We knew with the rain on Sunday that the blooms would last too long and with Katniss getting fixed on Tuesday,… Continue reading Family Fun At A Hanami Festival
One of the stores I have mentioned often in my posts is Daiso. It is by far my favorite store. Most of the things in Daiso is around ¥100 ($0.88) and occasionally some things are more expensive. The most expensive thing I found there was ¥800 ($7). While the items they sell are inexpensive, the items are nice quality, especially the dishes. They change their items out often with the various seasons and holidays. It's fun to go see what new things they have.
